Fredison Costa wins 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon

The Walt Disney World Marathon came down again to a rivalry between two Brazilian runners, who have been jockeying for the title the past few years.

This time Fredison Costa, who lost the title last year to Adriano Bastos, beat Bastos today,  year, reclaiming the crown with a time of 2:21:39. Bastos, 35, was second at 2:22:55.

For the past 10 years Brazilian runners have dominated this event. Bastos has won the marathon eight times and this is Costa's third win the past four years.

“It was really hard and the other runners were really good, but at about (Mile 22) I knew that I could win the race,” Costa said through an interpreter. “This was the most important race in my life.”

Asked if he was eager to try to regain the title from Costa next year, Bastos said with a sly smile: “For sure.”

Angela Brito of Ecuador came to Disney World for the first time to win the women’s division, crossing the finish line at 2:47:44, nearly seven minutes ahead of second-place finisher Brittney Christianson of Minot, ND.

Other winners include:
  • Ronnie Holassie of Miramar, Fla., won for the second straight year with a time of 2:36:54 in the Men's Masters division.
  • Bo Franz took the Women’s Masters crown with a time of 3:11:26.
  • Krige Schabort of Cedartown, Ga., repeated as the men’s champion in the wheelchair division with a time of 1:51:51.
  • Jacqui Kapinowski of Tequesta, Fla. won the women’s wheelchair division with a time of 2:42:04.
